Looking for Conference Proceedings?
Conference proceedings can be difficult to locate. First try the different approaches explained below and then, if you do not find what you are looking for, please ask a librarian for assistance. If Penn does not own a particular conference proceeding, you can place an interlibrary request for it.

Hint 1: Conference proceedings are only entered in Franklin under the title of the conference or meeting and not under the individual paper titles.

Hint 2: If you are looking for ACM, IEEE, MRS or AIP conference proceedings, use the E-Resource Locator to access them through the ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, MRS and AIP collections.

* Using an  Author Search
The meeting name can be searched as the author of the proceedings, so try an Author search for the name of the conference, symposium, or meeting. (Leave off title terms such as "Proceedings of the", "Transactions of the", the number of the conference, or the year of the conference.)

Examples:
American Chemical Society Meeting
International Comparative Literature Association Congress
Symposium on Space Nuclear Power and Propulsion

*Using the Advanced Search
Select "Conference" from the Search by: menu. This will search for your terms against the conference title, date, location, or sponsor.

Examples:
IEEE biologically motivated
United Nations Development

If you get too many results, narrow down your search by adding other words that appear in your citation such as the conference date or location, or conference, symposium, report, etc.

*Some Exceptions
Some conference proceedings are published as part of a series with each conference being given an individual title and number. Common examples are SPIE (The International Society for Optical Engineering) Proceedings and MRS (Materials Research Society) Symposia,
  1. Title known:

If you know the individual title of the volume, search it as a title. Example: Do a title search for: Mechanical properties of nanostructured materials and nanocomposites

  2. Series/Volume Known:
  3. If you know the name of the series and the volume number, use the Advanced Search, select Search by: Series, and enter the series name and the volume number Example: Materials Research Society 791
