Franklin User Guide - Subject Heading Search

A Subject Heading search is a search of the string of characters found in the subject heading field of the record. Both Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) are used in Franklin. Limits cannot be applied to subject searches.

Consult the LCSH at the Van Pelt Library Reference Desk or your departmental library; or the MeSH at the BioMedical Library, Van Pelt Library, or selected departmental libraries.

Examples of subject headings (double dashes, --, are optional):

france--history--revolution

milton, john, 1608-1674--paradise lost

hardy, thomas, 1840-1928--criticism and interpretation

psychology, experimental

human genetics--government policy

You may also use the results of any search to determine appropriate subject headings.

Click on the subject headings to see other resources on that subject.

When doing subject heading searches, watch for search redirects. These can lead to additional or related subject heading terms on your topic. For example, if you search "costume" you will see, in the subject headings display, the More Info button to the left of costume. When you click the More Info button, Narrower Terms ("academic costume") and See Also terms ("uniform") will be displayed. Click any of these terms to redirect your search.

Use the Subject Heading Keyword search if you do not know the exact subject heading.
